Mobile Website of the Week: Ted Smith Law Group, PLLC

This week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner is more than just a great looking site. Find out how this company’s outward expression of their brand landed them a winning title.
Congratulations to the Ted Smith Law Group for making a sweet mobile website and being this week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner!

What Did We Like About This Mobile Website?

Is it okay to say that we liked this mobile website purely because it looks good? I’ll admit that the header and widget colors were so pretty, I couldn’t stop staring. One of the most attractive elements of this mobile website is it’s color matching.
Enter m.tedsmithlawgroup.com in your phone’s browser and you’ll immediately land on this highly attractive home page. Wondering why your eyes are so mesmerized by this glory? Patsy, the mobile site developer, made sure to keep the regular site’s color palette consistent throughout the mobile site. She tied the colors used in the Ted Smith Law Group company logo into the mobile website to enforce the company’s brand identity.

Build Your Brand Identity

Company branding is one of the most important things to consider on a mobile website. Mobile visitors are often short on time and will browse your site for only a few seconds before leaving. When they move on from your mobile website, you want your company and brand to resinate with them. A prominent header which clearly displays your company’s name and logo is the first step to branding your mobile website. Follow suit of Patsy and take branding your one step further by sprinkling the color from your company’s logo into different elements of your mobile website.

Mobile Website of the Week: Homes by Campus

It’s a new year! What better way to kick off 2012 than with a new home in beautiful Colorado. Thanks to this week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner, you can finally say goodbye to your passé, 2011 living situation, and say hello to your new, humble home in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Congratulations to Homes by Campus for being this week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner!

Things we liked about this mobile website

You created your regular website with what once was the cutting edge and most attractive technology in web design — Flash. The unfortunate surrender Adobe made to the web of their beloved Flash technology, left your transition photo gallery and smoothly animated drop down menus out of date.

We all know (or should know) that Flash is incompatible on smartphones. With the urgent time crunch to get your site looking great on the mobile web, developers have been figuring out clever workarounds when converting a flash site to a mobile website.

The Homes by Campus regular website mainly consisted of a Flash photo gallery and scrolling side bar which posed a problem when converting to mobile. We loved how Peder, the developer, figured out a workaround to create a Flash-less mobile website out of a Flash-packed regular site.

What’s a workaround and how did Peder do it?

Used frequently in the web programming and development space, the term workaround refers to bypassing an obvious problem in a system by creating a temporary solution.

When Peder went to convert his Flash-packed website to a mobile-friendly version, he noticed a problem with compatibility. In order to avoid the embarrassment of incompatible Flash elements from the home page taking up space on his mobile site, Peder created a workaround by simply rearranging the mobile site.

After converting his site to mobile, Peder completely deleted the home page. He quickly whittled his mobile website down to the content that mattered the most – house listings. The listings page is now the first thing visitors see when they access his site on a mobile device. Makes sense, right?

Minimal content and easy to use are the two things we loved about this mobile website. Check out m.homesbycampus.com on your smartphone now. What do you like about this site?

The Duda team oohed and awed over the enticing option of being wed on the beautiful coastline of Spain thanks to the simplicity and elegance of the mobile website, m.MarryInSpain.com and unanimously awarded it Mobile Website of the Week this week. Congratulations!

What we liked about this Mobile Website

After speaking to Iain, the company and site owner, about his mobile website, I came to appreciate its simple structure even more. Iain said that the objective for his mobile website was to get site visitors to contact him. Knowing that mobile browsers spend little time actually reading the content on a mobile website, the methods of contact were the main focus of his site.

How This Mobile Site was Made

With the focus of the mobile website providing methods of contact to the visitor, the bulk of the work in creating the site was adding the widgets at the top of each page. Since Iain’s regular site was built from a basic WordPress template and contained only text and a few images, all of the content converted perfectly to mobile.

Each page of the site provides the visitor with three different ways to contact Iain.

The classic and highly effective click-to-call widget is at the top, followed by a click-to-email button which automatically opens up your phone’s mail client to a preset email. Iain placed a social media share widget at the bottom of the contact navigation menu. All widgets were added from the Add Features tab in the basic editor.

“I just wanted people to initially contact me after visiting the mobile site, not flip through the pages to find out information on their own”, said Iain. This message was clearly displayed on m.marryinspain.com, which is why we liked the site so much.

Get Married in Spain

Did you know that the Spanish coast is one of the top most popular wedding destinations in Europe? Book your Spanish wedding with Iain today! Send him an email or contact him on twitter fo find out more information about your future wedding.

Mobile Website of the Week: The Uptempo Magazine

Chic and sleek is what we had our eye out when searching for the best of the best in mobile website design this week. What better represents this than an artistic magazine which has created a mobile site that highlights the hot happenings of fashion and the visual and performing arts.

Congratulations to The Uptempo Magazine! We love that you’ve created a mobile-friendly magazine to help keep your readers up to date on the hottest trends while on the go!

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What did we like about this Mobile Site?

  1. This mobile magazine was actually converted over by using a blog template.
  2. Only the most important content of UptempoMagazine.com was transfered over to the mobile website.
  3. The complete conversion of this mobile website literally took less than 5 minutes.

How was This Mobile Website Made?

This online magazine is actually a blog. Each article written for The Uptempo Magazine is posted on their website in the form of a blog post (most recent article at the top and the older articles follow chronologically). After Joseph, from The Uptempo Magazine, entered his URL into DudaMobile, he was prompted to choose between the blog template or the regular mobile website layout.

For the sake of showing off each article, Joseph chose the blog template.

Joseph wanted to make sure is mobile browsers were able to get easy access to The Uptempo Magazine’s articles. The regular website provides links to pages like Editorials, Archives, Submissions, Press, Subscribe and Contact. These pages were completely eliminated from the mobile website which accentuated each article.

“On our mobile site, we keep all of the main content on the main homepage, that way if someone wants to get the latest updates, they can do so right there without having to look around. The pages we haven’t included on the mobile site were the ones that our readers most likely would not attempt to access from their phones.”

When I talked to Joseph, he said it took him no time at all to create this mobile website. I decided to take a pass at it and time myself to see how long it actually takes to create a mobile website for The Uptempo Magazine. Take a look at this short video of me trying to replicate m.UptempoMagazine.com and see it Joseph’s claim was correct.

Mobile Website of the Week: POPFOODIE

We selected the mobile site for this weeks Mobile Website of the Week winner who pushed the limits of the traditional mobile website development we typically see.

Congratulations POPFOODIE! The exceptional design of your unconventional mobile website struck our fancy.

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What did we Like About This Mobile Site?

  • We couldn’t find the navigation menu at the top of the home page. And we loved it. The navigation menu was strategically placed in a completely unordinary position.
  • Methods of contact are located at the bottom of each site page rather than the top. Just like the navigation menu, we thought this was different, in a cool way.
  • This site’s content was jazzed up with custom text coloring.

How Was this Site Made?

Patrick, the business owner, wanted users to first read the general overview about POPFOODIE’s services before clicking through his mobile website. He bumped the navigation menu down to the bottom of the home page by adding a text element to the top of the page above it.

In the advanced editor, Patrick inserted a text element above the first button of his navigation menu. Within the element, he pasted his company overview.

In mobile website design, we typically see the click-to-call, mobile maps and click-to-email widgets at the top of each page with the idea that mobile visitors will be more inclined to contact the place of business. Patrick decided to mix things up and place these widgets in the footer of his site, below the navigation menu.

Did you notice the custom text coloring on the Mobile Design page? Small fixes like these can give your mobile website the professional look it needs. The red text also helps guide the users eye through each section of the site’s content.

With the advanced editor, Patrick was able to select specific words or phrases within the site’s text to change their color. POPFOODIE’s site text happened to be broken up into separate text elements on his page which allowed him to select specific elements and change their color.

If the text on your site that you wish to edit separately is not in it’s own element, add it in a new text element.

Does POPFOODIE Have Anything to do with Food?

Actually, yes! POPFOODIE provides marketing, design, and communication strategies for foodies and restaurants of all sorts. From traditional sit-down establishments to food trucks and pop-ups, they bring your web presence into the 21st century with mobile optimized site design, modern marketing and PR methods.

Follow them on FacebookTwitter or send Patrick an email for any food related marketing services.

Directing Users to Your Mobile Site

Your mobile website is designed, published and ready to go. Now what? Nearly 20% of the sites built and beautifully designed on DudaMobile are not redirected from their regular sites.

One of the most important programmatic steps necessary when building a mobile website, is the creation of the redirection that will bring users to your site.

Generally, your regular desktop website will be located at a URL of the form www.mysite.com – and you’ll place your mobile site on the subdomain m.mysite.com. While mobile users could type in m.mysite.com and reach your mobile site, they are more likely to go to the address they know from the desktop web. More importantly, search engines will most often point to the www.mysite.com web address.

There are three ways to go about creating this redirection

  1. On the front-end, using JavaScript.
  2. On the back-end, using whatever programming language used in your site.
  3. On the web server level, if your site is served by Apache, using .htaccess directives.

Whatever the approach, the principle is the same

First: Detect which user agent (web browser) the user is arriving from. If the browser is a mobile browser – that if certain substrings are found within the user agent: iPhone, Android, etc. (lists of these are available via a quick Google search) – you can continue on to the second step.

Second: Redirect the user to the mobile site’s address. Take into consideration whether or not you’d like to forward mobile users arriving at any page of your desktop site to the mobile site, or, alternatively, only those arriving at the homepage. If you choose the former, you’ll then want to decide whether to forward users arriving on a given page onto the parallel page on the mobile site, or simply to the mobile site’s homepage. Obviously, you’ll need to ensure your mobile site’s code is built in such a way that allows for this. If you create your mobile site on DudaMobile, this is all taken care of for you.

Mobile Website of the Week: Milestone Lawyer

This week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner argued it’s case for their site’s excellent mobile web design… and won! Congratulations to Milestone Lawyer, your mobile website is professional and abides by the laws of mobile website design.

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What Did We Like About This Mobile Website?

Clean Colors – We couldn’t get enough of the sharp simplicity of the mobile website’s colors.

Simple Navigation – Everything the mobile website has to offer is right on the home page in the site’s navigation menu.

Miniature version of the regular website – Think this mobile site is simple? It’s actually just a teeny version of a super simple regular website!

How Was this Mobile Website Made?

Dustin, from Milestone Lawyer, is a well-known lawyer by day and a skilled mobile website developer by night. To continue with the orange on white theme of his regular site, on m.milestonelawyer.com, Dustin changed all text on the mobile site to orange.

Dustin was able to change the color of the text right in the basic editor.

Peruse through the navigation menu of Milestone Lawyer’s mobile site and you’ll find that everything you need can easily be accessed through the home page. Displaying all site pages in the navigations menu doesn’t work for all websites converted to mobile. It did, however, work in Dustin’s favor since www.milestonelawyer.com is such a simply designed regular website.

No special skills were necessary to enable all pages to be displayed in the navigation menu. The initial conversion from regular to mobile did it automatically.

Finally, we loved how this mobile website is a teeny version of the regular website. Little to no content was deleted from the mobile site to optimize it for mobile users because of the regular site’s pure simplicity. Take a look at the likeness of the two navigation menus, they’re identical.

I’m not confused, are you?
