Mobile Website of the Week: Homes by Campus

It’s a new year! What better way to kick off 2012 than with a new home in beautiful Colorado. Thanks to this week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner, you can finally say goodbye to your passé, 2011 living situation, and say hello to your new, humble home in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Congratulations to Homes by Campus for being this week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner!

Things we liked about this mobile website

You created your regular website with what once was the cutting edge and most attractive technology in web design — Flash. The unfortunate surrender Adobe made to the web of their beloved Flash technology, left your transition photo gallery and smoothly animated drop down menus out of date.

We all know (or should know) that Flash is incompatible on smartphones. With the urgent time crunch to get your site looking great on the mobile web, developers have been figuring out clever workarounds when converting a flash site to a mobile website.

The Homes by Campus regular website mainly consisted of a Flash photo gallery and scrolling side bar which posed a problem when converting to mobile. We loved how Peder, the developer, figured out a workaround to create a Flash-less mobile website out of a Flash-packed regular site.

What’s a workaround and how did Peder do it?

Used frequently in the web programming and development space, the term workaround refers to bypassing an obvious problem in a system by creating a temporary solution.

When Peder went to convert his Flash-packed website to a mobile-friendly version, he noticed a problem with compatibility. In order to avoid the embarrassment of incompatible Flash elements from the home page taking up space on his mobile site, Peder created a workaround by simply rearranging the mobile site.

After converting his site to mobile, Peder completely deleted the home page. He quickly whittled his mobile website down to the content that mattered the most – house listings. The listings page is now the first thing visitors see when they access his site on a mobile device. Makes sense, right?

Minimal content and easy to use are the two things we loved about this mobile website. Check out m.homesbycampus.com on your smartphone now. What do you like about this site?

Mobile Website of the Week: Milestone Lawyer

This week’s Mobile Website of the Week winner argued it’s case for their site’s excellent mobile web design… and won! Congratulations to Milestone Lawyer, your mobile website is professional and abides by the laws of mobile website design.

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What Did We Like About This Mobile Website?

Clean Colors – We couldn’t get enough of the sharp simplicity of the mobile website’s colors.

Simple Navigation – Everything the mobile website has to offer is right on the home page in the site’s navigation menu.

Miniature version of the regular website – Think this mobile site is simple? It’s actually just a teeny version of a super simple regular website!

How Was this Mobile Website Made?

Dustin, from Milestone Lawyer, is a well-known lawyer by day and a skilled mobile website developer by night. To continue with the orange on white theme of his regular site, on m.milestonelawyer.com, Dustin changed all text on the mobile site to orange.

Dustin was able to change the color of the text right in the basic editor.

Peruse through the navigation menu of Milestone Lawyer’s mobile site and you’ll find that everything you need can easily be accessed through the home page. Displaying all site pages in the navigations menu doesn’t work for all websites converted to mobile. It did, however, work in Dustin’s favor since www.milestonelawyer.com is such a simply designed regular website.

No special skills were necessary to enable all pages to be displayed in the navigation menu. The initial conversion from regular to mobile did it automatically.

Finally, we loved how this mobile website is a teeny version of the regular website. Little to no content was deleted from the mobile site to optimize it for mobile users because of the regular site’s pure simplicity. Take a look at the likeness of the two navigation menus, they’re identical.

I’m not confused, are you?

Mobile Website of the Week: Kevin Sullivan Dental

Did you happen to catch our recent write up about mobile web design best practices? This week for Mobile Website of the Week, we selected a site which displayed every one of the design tips mentioned in the article. These four tips made this weeks winning site look just as clean and crisp as their patients teeth!

Congratulations to Kevin Sullivan Dental! Your polished mobile website makes us smile.

Mobile Website

What did We Love About This Mobile Website?

Kevin’s mobile web designer, Chris, followed four mobile design tips down to the tee. So, the four things we loved about this mobile website were:

  1. The content is customized for mobile devices.
  2. Images were reduced to the very essentials.
  3. Chris made sure to include plenty of white space.
  4. All important links were turned into buttons.

How Was this Mobile Site Made?

Before we dive deep into mobile design methodology, I first just want to comment on the simplicity of Kevin Sullivan’s mobile website. If you take a look at the site, you’ll see that it really only consists of one page. Chris’ reasoning behind this one page wonder was that, “it would be easier for people to just see all the information on one page rather then searching through the site for what they need”. Well said, Chris.

Customized Content

To cut down a seven page website into a single page mobile website, Chris had to choose which content was most important for Kevin’s mobile visitors. He decided the most important content was maps and directions to each one of Kevin’s office locations, a click-to-call widget, a send business info via SMS button and a link to client testimonials.

Essential Images

Kevin’s regular website has images on all seven pages. Chris reduced the amount of images on the Kevin Sullivan Dental mobile website to eliminate clutter and brighten up the site’s appearance. This site looks great with only two photos on it!

White Space

With the optimization of content and the reduction of images, Kevin’s mobile website was left with plenty of white space. This negative space opens up his site and makes it easier for visitors to navigate through the content. Though the white space isn’t technically white, it’s still lighter than the site’s buttons and text color which makes it work.

Big Buttons

Chris turned all important links on Kevin’s site into big buttons. On the home page, he added maps and directions widgets, click-to-call buttons and a send business info via SMS widget. These make it extremely easy for patients to contact Kevin.

Mobile Website of the Week: Find Girls At

It’s no secret that we love our mobile website templates. Seeing them incorporated in mobile website design brings joy to the hearts of all Dudas. This week the Mobile Website of the Week winner we chose, was able to select a template from our template gallery and completely customize it to look like their regular website.

Congratulations to Find Girls At, your mobile website rocks and was chosen by the Dudas as Mobile Website of the Week!

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What is Find Girls At?

Find Girls At is a website that pulls check-in data from Gowilla and Foursquare, providing guys with the accurate insights on what bars and clubs have the highest concentration of girls at any moment. Of course, it made sense to Alex and Alex, developers of Find girls At, to create a mobile website, since their site visitors are typically on the go. “In our mission to find girls, we created an easier way to complete the task with a mobile website”.

What did we like about this mobile website?

Believe it or not, this unique mobile website was built off of a template. We were impressed in what the Alexes were able to create from the mobile website template they selected.

Alex and Alex, liked the navigation menu and look of the Dessau Design template, but didn’t care for the colors or background image. They invested a small amount of time into customizing the template they chose for their mobile website.

The only things the Alexes changed to make their mobile website their own were the following:

  • Background image
  • Header image
  • Navigation icons
  • Navigation menu outline color
  • Additional text boxes

How did they make this mobile site?

Their regular website is fairly simple. After converting their site to a mobile website, the Alexes didn’t have to delete any content. The first thing they did was change the background image to match the background of their regular site.

To add a custom background image in their mobile website, Alex and Alex went through the Custom Design tab, where, in the General Design Options, they were able to add an image to the background of their site. The pink argyle image was pulled from the Find Girls At regular website. This image was used for the background of their mobile site.

Alex and Alex used a unique font for the header in their regular website which wasn’t supported by DudaMobile. To replicate the header on the mobile site,  they took a screenshot of the header, opened the image in Adobe Photoshop (any image editing software works) and inverted the colors (switched the black and white). They uploaded the header image in the Custom Design tab under the header settings.

While in the Custom Design tab, Alex and Alex changed the navigation menu icons to symbols that better suited the theme of their mobile website.

After completing these quick fixes, the Alexes weren’t completely satisfied with how their mobile website looked. There were still small traces of the template they selected on their site. In the Advanced Editor, the Alexes were able to change the outline color of the navigation menu from blue to black. They were also able to add supplemental text fields which are designed to help their mobile visitors navigate through the site.

Mobile Website of the Week: The Merry Ploughboy Pub

The site we chose for this weeks Mobile Website of the Week winner is just as flawless as the beer made in the country it comes from. Raise your glasses and give a toast to The Merry Ploughboy Pub! Sláinte!

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What did we like about this mobile website?

There are three great things about this mobile website that we absolutely had to share with you.

1. Each tab of the Navigation Menu on the home page is customized with Navigation Icons which correspond to the button’s content.

2. The Show Menu tab contains a simple list of all dishes served. No images, no fluff, just simple text describing what’s available from the kitchen.

3.  Since this is an Irish pub owned and managed by musicians, their mobile website would be incomplete without multimedia. We loved the video of Irish dancing on the Dublin Shows page.

How was this mobile site made?

After The Merry Ploughboy Pub’s, Eoghan, entered the URL of his regular site in DudaMobile’s mobile website creation tool, he deleted some content, then dove right into customization. The first thing he did was change the standard star Navigation Menu Icons to images that were more specific to each tab.

He kept the content on the Show Menu page as simple as it is on his regular website. Large amounts of photos and media can get in the way when browsers are viewing mobile websites. Multimedia causes a distraction on especially important pages, like, in this case, ones containing restaurant menus.

In the initial conversion from the regular website to the mobile website, an embedded YouTube video was carried over to the mobile site. Eoghan decided to keep the video on the Dublin Shows page to give his mobile visitors an opportunity to watch an example of the performances at The Merry Ploughboy Pub.

When a mobile site visitor selects the video link, they are redirected to YouTube.com and can instantly watch the clip.

Connect with The Merry Ploughboy Pub

Located in Dublin, Ireland, The Merry Ploughboy Pub has an award winning Irish Music and Irish Dancing show. The pub is named after a traditional Irish band who owns and operates it. The Merry Ploughboy Pub is one of its kind in Ireland.

Find them on Facebook, follow them on twitter or send them an email for more information.

Next time you’re in Ireland, stop by for a pint (or two) and some traditional Irish entertainment.

Mobile Website of the Week: SweetCakes By Ronda

Mobile websites make our mouths water. This week for Mobile Website of the Week, we chose an extra sweet site as the winner.

Congratulations Ronda, owner of SweetCakes by Ronda!

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What Made this Mobile Website so Sweet?

In general, we loved how simple this mobile website is. The two aspects of this site that stood out to us were:

- Only five colors were used in this mobile website.

- There is a significant lack of multimedia elements (in the absolute best way possible!).

How did Ronda Make her Mobile Website?

Ronda has built her life around extravagant cake masterpieces. This being the case, you would think her mobile website design would be as over the top as her cake decorations. When choosing the colors for her mobile website, Ronda decided less would be more.

I counted the colors Ronda used on her mobile site and found that she only used five (I counted black and white as colors). Ronda chose pink as her main color, which was used in the background, navigation menu accents and share widget accents. She kept the sites body text black and the navigation menu text grey.

Ronda kept her mobile website free of multimedia. Since mobile phones have a slower loading time when connecting to the internet, jam packing them with videos, audio and large photo galleries will make site’s connection even slower.

This might be the simplest photo gallery we’ve ever seen in a mobile website. Ten great photos of cakes send the clear message to Ronda’s mobile site visitors that she’s an excellent cake decorator. What else do they need to know?

Mobile Website of the Week: Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy

Our famous software which automatically syncs your regular website’s content to your mobile website, entices famous people to create mobile-friendly websites with us. This week we chose the winner for Mobile Website of the Week who’s mobile website packs as much punch as he does.

The Mobile Website of the Week winning title goes to a professional MMA fighter! Congratulations Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy!

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What did we like about this Mobile Website?

This mobile website is a miniature replicate of Dan’s regular website. All of the content on the regular site was transferred over to the mobile website. We compared and contrasted the two sites and found that very little content (almost none!) was deleted from the mobile website. This particular website design works well for Dan’s mobile site!

Did you see the photo album collection in the “Photos” tab? Clicking on each album reveals its photo gallery. All of Dan’s photos were properly organized just as they are in his regular website.

We also really liked how Dan’s mobile website has a live Twitter feed embedded into the home page. This is something we’ve never seen before in Duda history.

How Was this Mobile Website Made?

While Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy was busy training for his upcoming fight, his personal web designer, Elizabeth, worked hard to create this mobile website.

“I entered the URL and selected a standard template. Duda imported the site colors, so I just customized the navigation menu bars and icons accordingly.” Elizabeth included all navigation menu buttons in the mobile website.

After setting up the look and feel of the mobile site, Elizabeth went through each page and organized the content. In the Advanced Editor, she was able add a Shape Design around each photo album which helped identify one from the other. Separate albums allowed Elizabeth to display all of Dan’s photos in a more organized manner.

Because Dan’s regular website was made with WordPress, Elizabeth was able to install a widget which displays his Twitter feed.

Social media is important to Dan’s brand so it was crucial that his Twitter feed is displayed on his mobile website, just like it is on his regular site. When Elizabeth converted the site to a mobile-friendly website, the WordPress plugin was carried over with the rest of the site’s content.

Where can I learn more about Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy?

Mobile Website of the Week: Atlas Branding Agencies

In honor of DudaMobile’s new mobile website reseller program, we decided to look through some of the sites that were created by our resellers for our Mobile Website of the Week winner.

This week we chose a mobile website which had exquisite design and displayed a high level of “cuteness”. Congratulations Atlas Branding Agencies!

Regular Website

Mobile Website

What did We Love about this Mobile Website?

Simplicity. The first thing that caught our attention (other than that fluorescent pink navigation menu) was the amount of content on the mobile website. The home page consists of a navigation menu with only three tabs. Don’t think this is enough information? Barbara from Atlas Branding Agencies did this intentionally. She wanted to limit the amount of information her mobile website visitors saw with hopes of them engaging more with her the content.

How was this site Made?

Remember Morrison from Iconic Brand5? Iconic Brand5 is an official DudaMobile reseller and created this mobile website for Atlas Branding Agencies. Morrison included premium features that he knew would benefit this marketing agency’s mobile website.

Barbara’s requirements for her mobile website were that she wanted it to be “cute”, easy to use and reflect her brand. Morrison changed the background image to blue which reflected the blue used in Atlas Branding Agencies’ logo. For the required “cuteness” Morrison changed the navigation menu color to pink.

To enable visitors to easily contact Atlas Branding Agencies, the Click-to-Call button is displayed on every page of the mobile website. The Click-to-Call button also has a call to action as its display text, which encourages mobile site visitors to place a call.

Morrison also included the Bookmark to iPhone home screen feature. When visitors land on Atlas Branding Agencies mobile website, a window pops up showing them how to bookmark the mobile site on their iPhone.

What does Atlas Branding Agencies Do?

Atlas Branding Agencies helps small businesses organize and enhance their online presence through Social Media, and other new marketing tools, in order to create a platform and a megaphone for businesses to get their message out. Visit their website for more information.
